 "Look at the Price" 2010-10-27
By A. Aguilar (NYC)
Ok, I just bought this processor from Micro Center in Long Island, NY for $229 (10-26-2010). I haven't even built the machine yet, but I jumped at the i7-870 just because it was so cheap. I'll update this later when I have the rest of the parts.

Hope I could save you a few bucks.

 "New Build" 2010-10-12
By Richard O. Sabine
I built a computer by using the suggestions from [...] with wonderful success. This is one of the products Rob Williams recommended and I was not disappointed! I managed to get a Microsoft of 7.5 on that scale that runs from 1 to 7.9 for every test except the hard drive which got a 5.9. I think I should have gotten the SATA 6 drive.

note: I did not much like the cooling fan that came with this package. I installed it just as the instruction recommended but I had trouble keeping the CPU temperature below 60 degrees Celsius. I bought a little bigger and better heat sink with more contact surface area on the CPU and now it operates around the 30 - 40 range. However, even now when I hit it hard with multiple CPU intensive processes it will take short trips above the 60 degree level. If you plan to stress this CPU to its limits you should search for appropriate cooling options.

"Processor is Fine -- Cooler is Something Else" 2010-09-01
By Bruce638 (Grand Blanc, MI USA)
I bought this Intel processor for a new computer that I built. There were no problems with the installation of the processor itself and it has performed without any problems.

The problem I had involved the installation of the supplied cooler fan assembly. Apparently it did not seat properly, and the thermal conducting compound was not making good contact. There was no good way to tell that the cooler was not seated well other than taking it back off and looking at the spread of the thermal conducting compound. As a result, the processor temperatures were high - even with light processing loads. I replaced the Intel supplied cooler with a liquid cooling system from Corsair. It was during the installation of that system when I was able to determine the problem with the original cooler. Everything works fine now.

I build a few 1156&1366 PC recently, used i7-930,920,i7-860,i5-750,650,661.

this i7-860 is excellent CPU, 32nm technology, so heat is never a problem, runs extremely stable,

Wonderful CPU, no Con expereienced.

 "An Excellent i7 (1156) Choice" 2010-06-07
By Kenneth J. Connor
OK, with the exception of the 980X, which is insanely expensive (wait for the locked version coming out later), this is the best CPU Intel makes. It is a steal at this price. The unlocked i7 1156 is also a great value, for about $50 more than the 860. This will do all that you need, unless you are a professional animator or video editor. I have built many Intel boxes...and this will be the CPU in my next build. Again, forget about dropping $1,000 on a 980X, unless you are made of money and have a need to impress your friends with the specs on your CPU. To me, the specs of your wallet are more important than the specs of your CPU...within reason.
