Whether performing video editing, playing graphic intensive games or running multiple background tasks simultaneously, users today have high expectations for their PC performance with little tolerance for degradation in experience. For people who run multiple demanding applications simultaneously, the Intel Pentium D processor is Intel's preferred desktop processor. Because it is powered by two execution cores in one processor it offers exceptional functionality and performance so consumers get the most productivity and enjoyment from their PCs when one or more people are running multiple applications at the same time.In today's usage environment, processor speed alone is not enough to ensure a great experience. Today users require the power of simultaneous computing found in a dual core processor. An Intel dual-core processor delivers consumer value by providing additional computing resources that expand the PC's capabilities and provide platform-level advancements for consumers in the form of higher throughput and simultaneous computing. With an Intel Pentium D processor users may perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly.

"A great processor. Potential is Unfathomable!" 2009-06-24

This processor is ONE OF THE BEST for overclocking, speed, power, multi-processing for your money on the market period.

At a standard 2.66ghz factory speed, this processor with a good heatsink/fan can be cranked up to 4 Ghz or more EASILY.

3 ghz is a very fast speed, and 4 is insane. To have a dual core intel processor at almost 3 ghz standard is great ESPECIALLY for the money.

This is such a cheap to purchase and incredibly strong and reliable processor, it is one of my very favorites, and if i had the time i would buy a couple to overclock and build a server for the games i play.

If you have a 775 motherboard and it accepts pentium d processors with 533 fsb on the motherboard, then GET THIS.

This component is in conjunction with the Intel Board, Ram, and SATA drive that is currently being used as a "headless system". Meets expectations for OS.

Delivery was earlier than estimated.

 "Extraordinary Overclocking Potential" 2006-08-25
By Eric Hamilton (UT)
This is not the fastest chip on the market by any measure, but it certainly holds its own against chips that cost four times as much money when it's overclocked. Get a quality 500W+ PSU, an overclock friendly motherboard (I suggest the ASUS P5ND2 SLI), and some decent fast RAM (DDR2 667 or DDR2 800 should do the trick), and you can build yourself a very fast system without spending much money!

If overclocking scares you, this chip is not going to provide smoking results in a gaming system compared to other chips in the price range, particularly in games. You'll want to look at the high end of AMDs single-core budget range for that. On the other hand, if you're looking to get the most performance you can for the money you spend, you can easily add 1 Ghz or more to the sticker speed without buying an expensive cooling system.

This chip works particularly well for audio and video encoding, decoding, and production tasks. The dual core is like having two CPUs on one chip, and it'll split the load particularly well when you're multi-tasking or running concurrent threads. It's not so great at load balancing most current games, but the raw horsepower you get from the overclock will be more than enough to post high framerates, and future games might be better optimized for dual-core systems, soon.

I should mention that this chip supports 64-bit operating systems, but many people using the 64-bit edition of Windows have experienced problems with low-level software and drivers. I suggest you stick with a 32-bit operating system for now (i.e., Windows XP Home or Pro) and upgrade later, after manufacturers have had ample time to get their product lines supported.

Bottom line: If you're willing to spend $400 or more for a small performance gain, there are faster speed-demons to be found. However, if you're looking for the best bang for your buck, and you're not afraid to tweak the default clock settings, look no further. This is it.

"4.1 GHz for Less thane $200 - Probably the fastest chip on the market." 2006-05-11
By OverTheMoon (overthemoonreview@hotmail.com)
This is the Pentium D 805 which was recently discovered to have some unusual properties that allow it to overclock at 4.1 GHz without major cooling. This is an industry marvel and has shocked everyone. Run a google search for "A 4.1 GHz Dual Core at $130 - Can it be True?" and you will find the HOWTO article on Tomshardware page. However you need to install at least a 500W PSU.

Enjoy.
