 "Mounting system is flaky" 2009-11-10
By MixMaster Jack (NC)
If you're looking for a "plug n play" CPU cooler, this may not be your best choice. It comes with no instructions on how to use the mounting, so there's no help if you've never used this type of fan mount. The locking tabs which hold the assembly to the motherboard are directly beneath the screws holding the fan in place, so they are almost impossible to manipulate with your hand, and impossible to reach with a screwdriver (the irony being that they have a slot in the top for using a screwdriver). Since the pressure fit tabs did not easily lock to my motherboard (Intel), I had to remove the four fan mounting screws, then the four screws holding the fan mounting bracket, before I could work directly with the locking tabs to hold the heatsink in place. Then I had to be careful not to apply too much pressure when re-mounting the fan bracket and fan, because a little too much pressure caused the locking tabs to pop out of the motherboard and I had to start over. This might be a little easier if you install it on the motherboard outside of the case, but I didn't try that approach. It's been running about a week now without any issues, but the motherboard is oriented vertically in my case, so I'm not feeling very confident about how long it will hold. On the plus side, it is very quiet. Be careful because it comes with the heat transfer gel already applied, so don't let the CPU contact area touch anything while you're getting ready to install.

"There has to be a better CPU fan" 2009-05-05
By J. Hadley (Dallas, TX)
Thermaltake was a brand I held in high esteem. So when it came to buying a CPU fan for my computer, I did not think twice about purchasing the TR2 M21. Well the first one I purchased lasted about 8 months. Then the fan seized over the weekend and I found myself looking for another fan locally. The selection around town was less than desirable. It was either buy another TR2 M21 or spend $80+. (Hindsight is always 20/20) But I went against my better judgment and purchased another TR2. That was only 5 months ago. Now I am in the market for yet another CPU fan, as my current TR2 suffered the same fate as the first.

It is possible Thermaltake's higher end equipment is better quality. However from my experience, I would strong discourage anyone from purchasing this CPU fan.

 "Looks okay, doesn't fit?" 2007-08-15
By M. Daneker (Spinnerstown, Pa USA)
I have two P4 machines, socket 775 and one Celeron D machine, same socket. When I needed a new cooler for one of my P4 machines I took the one from the Celeron and attached it so the P4 could keep running imeadiately.

I then ordered this one for the celeron, and it doesn't fit, not even close.

The copper is round, meaning that on either my P4 or Celeron machines only about 80% of the square proccessor surface area would be in direct contact.

Also, the Unit is square, all three of my socket 775 machines require rectangular mounting.

I don't know what this fits, but of my three socket 775 mother boards, none of the above.

"Great cooler, as long as you don't have to remove it" 2007-07-22
By R. Holman (SoJo, Utah, USA)
This cooler works well and has a decent quality design and copper-core. The fan is quiet, although I had to return the first one I ordered because the fan completely died after only a few weeks. Considering how many Thermaltake fans I've purchased over the years, I think they have had a darn good track record, notwithstanding this one. The only problems, albeit minor, I had with this cooler was when I had to remove it, as other reviewers have already mentioned. The fan has to be removed and the 4 corner tabs have to be carefully rotated 90 degrees with a screwdriver to release them from the motherboard. Once that was done, it released pretty well. Overall, for the price, this is a great value!!

"Excellent and dirt cheap. Can be difficult to install because of the poor Intel 775 motherboard design." 2007-06-04
By R. Bornstein
This is the best budget aftermarket 775 heatsink I have ever used. I've used lots of brands - Cooler Master, Spire, etc., but this is definitely the best for the money. It dropped my Pentium D 940 20 degrees over the stock Intel heatsink. Very impressive. I'm not surprised by all the install issues people have had. I have attached a ton of the 775 heatsinks and so it took me literally 30 seconds to hook this up in a very tight case. I didn't need to pull the fan. The 775 heatsink attachment is an awful design. When I first had to hook up a 775 heatsink a few years back I couldn't believe how screwed up and counter-intuitive it was. Since then I've had lots of practice I've gotten a lot better at it - but I still run into trouble occasionally. To hook this up without pulling the fan you need to make sure that the pushpins are perfectly situated before the install, you then need to slip your finger between the fan base and each pin and carefully push it in until it clicks (no way you can use the screwdriver insets). If you don't get it right on the first couple of shots or bend one of the edges of one of the puspins you will have problems. Most decent aftertmarket 775 heatinsks skip the whole thing because it is so pitiful. They give you a screw in bracket - it usually works great, but you have to pull off the motherboard to install it.
